Both Bayern and Lyon caused surprises for different reasons in their Champions League quarter finals with the Germans hammering Barcelona 8-2 and Lyon stunning Manchester City to progress.
Can Lyon perform another miracle or are Bayern set to batter another team? Check out Jason’s preview and we’ve outlined his best bets below.
It’s going to be a similar story for Lyon here as it was against Manchester City with them being big underdogs. We think if this game was played eight times Lyon might get through once.
Bayern Munich have been absolutely phenomenal, the first team to score eight in the knockout stages in the Champions League era, and to do it against Barcelona was incredible.
Bayern have won nine games in the competition on average by three goals or more. You’re having to look towards the handicap for an outright winner but they’re still too short there.
If Bayern are one or two up late on they’re not going to keep chasing the game so if you want a good price you’re going to have to pick the right score and we’ll go 2-0 to Bayern.
If you’re going the Lyon route, Memphis Depay will be double figures to score first and it might be worth looking in the anytime market as he’s the penalty taker, too.
Robert Lewandowski is just too short to back here and, given the amount of possession Bayern are going to have, I’d be looking at one of the runners coming through. Lyon play with three at the back and a low block so Lewandowski will struggle for space.
If we’re going for a Bayern first goalscorer other than the Polish forward it’s Thomas Muller as he can score from all situations whether it’s a turnover in possession or a late run.
