Rashford thanks Hancock for U-turn, says he always loved They Think It’s All Over

They think it's all over... but this one will run and run...

Matt Hancock

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has heaped praise upon Matt Hancock, claiming: ‘I thought he was great in They Think It’s All Over’.

The 22-year-old was responding to Hancock after the health secretary applauded Rashford’s role in forcing a government U-turn on extending free school meals throughout the summer.

It was the footballer’s heartfelt plea which ultimately convinced Boris Johnson to give free meals to children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Lauding Rashford on Sky News breakfast, the 41-year-old said: “He’s a jolly good chap. Manchester Athletic are lucky to have him.”

Responding in kind, the England striker waxed lyrical about the Conservative MP in a Tweet reading: “Thank you @MattHancock for your kind words. I’m such a big fan of yours. I thought you were great while hosting They Think It’s All Over and Room 101.

“Although, Holding the Baby was shite.”

They Think It’s All Over was a long-running BBC1 sport-themed comedy panel game during which middle-aged men posing as comedians made fun of footballers based on their appearance.

After paying tribute to Rashford, Hancock took to Twitter to lavish praise on several others he admired.

“I’d like to pay homage to one of the finest young actors of his generation, Marcus Radcliffe,” gushed the former culture secretary.

“His performances as Harry Porter were simply breathtaking and will live long in the memory.”

“I feel I should also mention his co-star Emma Thompson, who played the role of Heroin to perfection.”

Hancock went on to thank his two favourite artists while growing up in the 1980s.

“For my money, Eddie Mercury is the greatest male vocalist of all time. Queens of Leon’s set at Live Aid is the stuff of legend.

“If I were to pick my favourite comedian of that era, it would have to be Freddy Murphy. His hilarious stand-up comedy film ‘Monday Night Raw’ had me in fits of laughter.”
