Manchester United are looking for a certain type of player who can come in and help them in their time of need – and Tyrone Mings could be just who they need.
Watching the way he dictated play on an extremely difficult England debut on Monday night was really impressive. It was no surprise really because he has shown for some time that he has a brilliant character.
I watched him closely for Aston Villa last season and he was absolutely immense in the play-off final. It was no surprise to me to see Villa splash out more than £20million to sign him on a permanent deal and he has continued his fine form in the Premier League.
Mings looks to me almost like a throwback. Whenever his teams are under pressure you can see him having a go at his team-mates and getting everything orgainsed. People say the game has changed and that people like that in the game are a dying breed – but that’s wrong.
Look at Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, they’re always barking orders from the touchline Look at the likes of Jordan Hednerson and how players like him are on the pitch. They are always shouting at their players and the best ones will respond to that.
I’m sure Mings could come in and do that at Manchester United – although they might already have a player in Harry Maguire who can be can be that person for them already. He certainly should be.
Harry’s got enough experience having played for top teams and for England at the World Cup so he should have enough about him to be the leader at Old Trafford. I understand it can be hard sometimes because people always revert back to the old days of Roy Keane, Bryan Robson, Mark Hughes and Eric Cantona – those types of people. They’re very rare nowadays and the game has changed but you need those characters in your side.
Going back to Mings, he definitely looks like that sort of character and not only that, he’s a very, very good player who could make an immediate impact. And while I think he would be a good signing, if United don’t want to dip into the transfer market again and want to look a bit closer to home, they could do a lot worse than keeping faith with Axel Tuanzebe.
I like him a lot and he could be one who could grow into the team. Of all the youngsters currently at Manchester United, he looks like one who could step up and start playing every week and I truly think he could go on to become a world-class player. I know he made a mistake against Arsenal but everyone makes a mistake every now and again and I like how calm he looks when he has the ball at his feet.
He’s quick as well and he’s more than capable of paying out of the back which would make him a good partner for Maguire. United need to make sure they are getting the best out of him and that can be difficult when things aren’t going well, and they aren’t at the moment.
Then again, that’s what the manager is there for and he could have a proper leader in his team if he gives Tunazebe the right guidance. If not, Mings could be a ready-made alternative.
