Fitba Roundup: Sock-shopping at Hampden and parking ticket revenge

Are Flower of Scotland's days numbered?

Robert Snodgrass Kevin de Bruyne

The international break didn’t disappoint. Well, I was going to say as a Scot it did disappoint – but this is just what we all expect now.

It wasn’t all bad news, though, as this week we’ve got shopping for socks, cookware ultras, parking tickets and an overhead kick. A pretty standard weekend in Scotland then.

Scotland suffered back-to-back defeats at home to Russia and Belgium respectively, the latter scoring three in the first half an hour to kill the tie and any little hope that lingered in the half empty Hampden Park. With the tie dead, hope dead and probably a wish to be dead, those within Hampden had to find alternative ways to stay entertained…

Arguably, a woman buying socks has been the highlight of the last few years of supporting Scotland – apart from the 32 seconds we were beating England of course. With times looking bleak, the misery seemingly never ending and no hope of progress any time soon, fans looked to Brexit for ways to politely express their anger.

Oli McBurnie, who was of course Scotland’s most expensive player for about a week in the summer, put himself in the firing line of the Tartan Army after a video was leaked of him announcing Scotland duty to be shite. He had a bit of a stinker on Friday, and despite the rest of the team being equally bad, it was McBurnie who took the pelters on social.

I can’t share 99% of the pelters, due to us Scots and our unique way with words, so here’s a PG tweet to give you all a taster:

Thankfully, despite Scotland’s usual nonsense, we had the delights of the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup to give us our weekly football fix.

Arbroath, who have been on a bit of a rampage over the last few years – rising from League Two to the Championship – continued their progress with a big win over Dundee United. Bobby Linn scored the winning penalty, but in true Scottish football style, his night didn’t end well.

You might think a cup win over Dundee United would be the best thing to happen to the town of Arbroath this weekend.

You’d be wrong. The best thing to happen to Arbroath is this:

I’m not saying Flower of Scotland is in danger of being replaced but if I was it, I’d be looking nervously over my shoulder…

Back to the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup – I’ll never tire of writing its name in full, a professional competition named after a biscuit is truly a gift from the footballing gods – and Clyde had a bit of a mad one. They came from two down to win 3-2, getting the comeback started in some style…

If the goal wasn’t enough, the fan launching their jacket into orbit as part of the celebration really notches this video up to excellent on the Scottish football scales. Pleasing.

Next Saturday can’t come quickly enough.
