Cork City midfielder Gearoid Morrissey scored two absolute crackers during his side’s dramatic 4-3 win over Finn Harps in the Airtricity Premier Division on Friday night — and both goals have the internet buzzing and League of Ireland fans calling for a Morrissey nomination for the Puskás award.

The 27 year old’s first was sublime and is the goal drawing all the plaudits right now. Taking a touch to control a headed clearance that had dropped to him on the edge of the box, Morrissey used his knee to knock the ball past an onrushing defender and then proceeded to smack a perfect volley past the despairing dive of Harps ‘keeper Ciaran Gallagher.

The strike was a much needed boost for City as it pulled them level for the second time in the game just before the half-time interval. Not content with that, though, Morrissey decided to take matters into his own hands once again 12 minutes into the second-half.

Latching onto a loose ball in midfield, the former Cambridge United man shrugged off one challenge to drive forward, sidestep another tackle and from 25 yards out bend a sumptuous strike into the far corner of the net. This time, Gallagher could only take a knee as he watched it fly in.

Both goals turned out to be crucial for John Caulfield’s side as City eventually came out on top in a seven-goal thriller at Finn Park. Last season’s runners-up have endured a difficult start to the new season, winning just two and drawing one of their opening five games to find themselves six points off table-toppers Shamrock Rovers already.

All that was forgotten, though, in the wake of the Morrissey wondershow in Donegal.

All this Puskás award talk reminds us of another time a hero from these shores shocked the world with an aesthetically pleasing piece of skill. In 2013, Stephanie Roche made headlines across the globe when her sensational goal for Peamount United in the Women’s National League went viral. Roche’s career trajectory skyrocketed and the clamour saw her nominated for the 2014 rendition of the award.

She came second on that occasion, losing out to some nobody called James Rodríguez who apparently scored an alright goal for Columbia in some unknown competition called the World Cup. With any luck — and a sh*tload of tweets — Morrissey’s first goal against Harps blows up in a similar fashion and gets nominated so he can go one better.
