Cash pours in for Dundalk’s Stephen Kenny to be next Ireland manager

Punters sweet on the League of Ireland boss as he challenges Mick McCarthy for favouritism to succeed Martin O'Neill ...

Stephen-Kenny

There has been huge support for League of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny to take over as the next Republic of Ireland manager, after the FAI confirmed this morning that both Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane have resigned.

Kenny’s odds have been slashed from 10/1 to 2/1 in the past hour and the Dundalk boss is now joint favourite at 2/1 with former Irish manager Mick McCarthy in Paddy Power’s betting.

Punters had initially swooped on McCarthy’s chances over the weekend, forcing them to cut the initial odds of 2/1 this morning as he tries to  boomerang his way back to the Boys In Green as manager of the Ireland camp.

A spokesperson for Paddy Power said.

Mick McCarthy was available at far bigger odds over the weekend, but we had to slash this price when a number of our Dublin shops reported seeing a significant rise in the number of bets being placed on ‘Captain Fantastic’ becoming the next Ireland manager.

This all suddenly makes senses now in light of this morning’s developments.

Meanwhile, ex-number two in the chain of command, Roy Keane has drifted from 7/1 to step up from his former post to manager, and is now currently a 16/1 shot to manage Ireland.

Given his volatile past with Mick McCarthy, it’s a whopping 100/1 shot that Big Mick will re-install Roy as his second in command should he become the next Ireland manager.

However, Paddy Power also reported seeing a number of bets on some seemingly less likely candidates for the job.

Former England boss Sven-Göran Eriksson has come in from odds of 66/1 to 25/1, while Robbie Keane has seen his odds shorten to the same.

But the betting firm risks paying out megabucks if hotelier Francis Brennan, Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy, Paddy Power himself, or Mattress Mick succeed in helping the Irish soccer team bounce back to winning ways.

All have been backed by hopeful punters at staggering odds of 5,000/1.
