Watch: Ex-Premier League defender nets utter horror own goal

It was a bad night for Damien Delaney and his Cork City side yesterday, and his early own goal kicked-off the night on the wrong foot altogether…

After spending 18 stellar years across the water in the UK plying this trade, Damien Delaney didn’t return to his native Cork City for games like Friday night.

The commanding 37-year-old centre half called time on his Premier League career in the summer, leaving Crystal Palace and signing for the SSE Airtricity League champions in June.

He was forced to endure a nightmare night on Friday though, as he started in a Cork defence that conceded four goals in the first half to a rampant Bohemians away from home in Dublin.

It was an unfortunate mishap from Delaney that kicked-off the first half horror show as the former Irish international embarrassingly sliced his back pass to goalkeeper Peter Cherrie into the back of his own net in the 10th minute.

A brace from Bohs striker Daniel Kelly and a Derek Pender strike helped seal a 4-2 victory for the home side, as Cork look to have all-but surrendered their league title to Dundalk. However, it was Delaney’s name on everyone’s lips leaving the game and you can watch his error thanks to RTE’s Soccer Republic show below:
