It was a case of Kun-and-done for our winning first goalscorer bettors this week as Sergio Aguero broke the deadlock between City and Huddersfield on his way to a ninth Premier League hat-trick as the champions rolled the Terriers over and tickled their metaphorical bellies in a 6-1 saunter at the Etihad.
The Argentine hit us hardest out of all the first goalscorer winners this weekend, taking three-times as many winning bets as Pedro for Chelsea, who was second in the list of Premier League strikes.
The former Atletico Madrid man now ties for second with Robbie Fowler in the list of Premier League hat-trick scorers – only Alan Shearer with 11 has more – and he will surely fancy his chances of catching the Geordie legend this season if City keep playing as they’ve started.
Pedro’s opener against Arsenal wasn’t the second biggest hit of the weekend for us though, as sandwiched between the two Premier League strikes was a man by the name of Lionel Messi. His hit for Barcelona against Alaves had fewer backers than Pedro, but at bigger stakes.
We’re not sure why people would be so confident in the all-time top Barcelona goalscorer?
It really is a mystery.
Villains
Where there are winners there have to be losers. And while Ronaldo may feel like one having failed to match Messi’s opening day feat in his Juventus debut, it’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who will surely have caused the most anguish to punters with a series of misses against Chelsea.
Though Romelu Lukaku let more first goalscorer backers down than the Gabonese, he did at least manage to get on the scoresheet for anyone who hedged their bets. Auba missed several gilt-edged chances as Arsenal fell behind, recovered, and then were caught with a sucker punch at the Bridge.
Aubameyang was highly fancied in the Golden Boot market prior to the start of the season, but two blanks for the speedster is not the kind of start he or his new manager Unai Emery needed.
He’ll need to find his shooting boots fast if the Gunners are to get back on target.
