Atletico Madrid v Roma – Edin Dzeko

Initially, it would seem as if there’s a fairly obvious candidate for this one: Antoine Griezmann. The Frenchman is one of Europe’s finest forwards, but hasn’t scored in any of his last six appearances. In fact, he’s only managed three goals in the entire season so far.

Edin Dzeko, meanwhile, has ten from 16 in 2017/18, including three in the Champions League. For that reason, he gets the nod ahead of Griezmann for this one.

Basel v Manchester United – Romelu Lukaku

The Belgian hitman is back scoring goals, and if he plays on Wednesday it’s not hard to see him finding the back of the net. There aren’t too many better centre-forwards taking part in this year’s Champions League, and against a relatively weak Swiss team, you’d expect him to do the business.

Juventus v Barcelona – Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi is the greatest footballer of all time. Why would you not back him to open the scoring?

PSG v Celtic – Neymar

You wouldn’t hold out much hope of Celtic keeping a clean sheet in this one. In truth, they’d be doing quite well to keep the French side down to one or two goals.

PSG have the potential to run riot against any side in the world, never mind Celtic, and the spearhead of any such intent will be their Brazilian superstar.

Sporting v Olympiakos – Bas Dost

Bas Dost has been banging in the goals in the Liga NOS this season, netting nine in 11 games. With Sporting playing at home against a fairly nondescript Olympiakos side, it’s not taking a giant leap of faith to believe the Dutchman will score the first one here.

Anderlecht v Bayern Munich – Robert Lewandowski

Surely, this one is all about which of Bayern’s gifted attacking players will break the deadlock. The Germans need a victory in order to try to keep up with PSG in the group, and should be going all out for the W.

Lewandowski has 17 goals in all competitions (18 apps) so far this year, so you’d be taking a bit of a risk by not picking him to open Bayern’s account against the Belgians.
