Watch: Injured teammate tribute goes horribly wrong for Napoli

One of the worse fads in modern football these days seems to be the unnecessary t-shirt tribute for a teammate going through a long-term injury.

We all watched in horror last season as Man City lined up, arm-in-arm, wearing jerseys back-to-front with the name of İlkay Gündoğan emblazoned on them. Such was the solemn atmosphere at the Etihad Stadium, Gündoğan was forced to put out a tweet to assure the world he hadn’t passed into the afterlife.

At least his anterior cruciate ligament injury was going to keep him for nearly a year, Barcelona were bigger offenders last week by unveiling a tribute to Ousmane Dembele and he’s only going to be out for FOUR months!

And don’t even get us started on Liverpool’s t-shirt gesture for Luis Suarez after he was banned for eight games for what the FA termed ‘insulting words with a reference to Patrice Evra’s colour’ in 2011.

Anyway, Napoli felt it was there turn during last night’s Champions League tie with Feyenoord and with Polish teammate Arkadiusz Milik out for the foreseeable future with a knee injury, the Italian club thought they’d get in on the act.

Things didn’t go to plan though, as after Lorenzo Insigne scored the opener in the 3-1 win he rushed towards substitute Piotr Zielinski to pull off tribute. The jersey was thrown on, but as Insigne held it up it in glory it turned out that Zielinski had given him his own shirt and not Milik’s.

What followed was a hilarious scramble to find the right top and BT Sport kindly put up the footage for all to see last night.
