Newcastle captain Jonjo Shelvey can consider himself extremely unlucky to have been sent off against Tottenham Hotspur in his team’s first Premier League game of the season.
The Romford-born midfielder was innocently attempting to regain his footing when Spurs’ young tyro Dele Alli cynically threw himself beneath Shelvey’s studs. It was a sly and Machiavellian move from Dele.
Jonjo was unfortunate that Alli contrived to be in the path of his boot, and paid the price for his naivety.
Clearly, the red will be rescinded when it becomes clear that Shelvey has been victim of a grand moment of brinksmanship from his opponent.
But that hasn’t prevented Newcastle fans from calling for the head of their captain.
Even some well-known names appear to have been taken in:

Shelvey is such a disgrace. Not fit to wear the shirt let alone the captains armband #NUFC ?

Shelvey has fucked every Newcastle fan & player today!

Shelvey needs to have that armband taken off him and given to Jamal. There's a way to snap a player and a way not to. #NUFC

And THAT is exactly why he shouldn't be captain. Shelvey so talented but he's an idiot and Alli is just as bad. #NUFC #THFC

I'm done with Shelvey, keeps letting us down. Merino looks like he could slot in nicely.

Bizarre seeing people criticising Gayle on here – we were competing well until Shelvey got sent off. His idiocy has cost us
