Punting Hall of Fame: Why one Dublin punter has €19,371 more reasons to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

One lucky lad is in clover after his €10 mid-week acca clicks to ensure the Guinness is on him today.

You don’t need to be asked twice to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, particularly if you’re Irish.

A day off work, plenty of gargle and a 24-hour free pass to dress up like a Leprechaun and belt out the ‘Fields of Athenry’.

But while Ruby Walsh exploded into life to put the knife into Paddy at Cheltenham 2017 in the afternoon, one canny Dublin punter was quietly rolling up a 10-fold acca on the footie last night.

But it wasn’t all plain sailing for his capital gains.

After safely predicting that Monaco would give Manchester City the run-around and a rejuvenated Leicester would become the only Premier League side to make it through to the last eight of the Champions League – he still needed the Luck of the Irish – and some German ingenuity – to bag his bounty.

With Thursday night’s Europa League fixture between rival Bundesliga firms Schalke 04 and the wonderfully-named Borussia Monchengladbach on a knife-edge, things began to unravel.

The sides had drawn 1-1 in the first leg, but Schalke soon found themselves 2-0 down and this screamer from BMG’s Mahmoud Dahoud seemed to seal their – and our friend’s – Thursday night fate.

However, St Patrick had other plans.

Not only did SO4 fight back to draw 2-2 (giving our main a 3-2 result as he’d backed them to win +1 on the handicap), a 70th-minute winner from Man United’s Juan Mata against FC Rostov meant the shortest-priced team in his 10-fold was also about to deliver a cool 19k for his 10 stake.

Well done, sir!
