Can Sutton use the ‘magic of the cup’ to spring this 500/1 upset against Arsenal?

Here are the three craziest bets we've had on Sutton v Arsenal, as the non-league side attempt to conjure up the biggest shock of the round

Lincoln have already shocked Burnley in the FA Cup to make the quarter finals, but surely lightning can’t strike twice as non-league Sutton United face Arsenal on Monday evening? That hasn’t stopped some punters believing in another FA Cup miracle and while it might not cost Arsene Wenger a job, it’ll certainly cost Paddy a few quid.

Sutton to beat Arsenal 2-0: 200/1

Sutton have won just nine league games at home this season and four of them have been 2-0, so this might not be quite as crazy as it sounds. Alright so it might be – despite being hammered 5-1 in Munich in the Champions League it’s hard to deny that Arsenal are a class above Torquay, Macclesfield, Aldershot and Bromley, despite what you may hear on Arsenal Fan TV.

That hasn’t stopped 50 punters plumping for the 2-0 correct score though at 200/1. The last time Arsenal went on their travels and lost 2-0 was almost 18 months ago – and that was against Chelsea. Is swapping Stamford Bridge for Sutton that much of a crazy stretch?

Sutton to beat Arsenal 3-0: 500/1

If 2-0 was a stretch, 3-0 is jaw-droppingly optimistic. The last team to lose 3-0 in Sutton was Havant and Waterlooville back in November 2015 in the Conference South – and it would take something quite extraordinary if the Gunners were to suffer the same fate on Monday night.

There may be some reason for the eight punters who have backed this correct score to believe however. Last season Arsene Wenger took a half-strength team to Sheffield Wednesday for what most expected would be a routine League Cup Fourth Round win. It was – for Wednesday that is. It was the first time the Gunners had lost to a lower league side by a three-goal margin since 1959.

Could Sutton break that record again?

Jamie Collins to score and Sutton to beat Arsenal 1-0: 650/1

OK, let’s be honest, if Sutton are to nick a result it is likely to be 1-0. Millwall and Lincoln have already nicked late goals to shock Premier League opposition over the weekend, so if you’re backing Sutton a 1-0 win would seem the most sensible. Two punters however are taking this punt to the next level of optimistic, by picking 32-year-old defender Jamie Collins to be the man to get the goal.

He was the hero when Sutton knocked Leeds out in the last round, and there’s a least two PP punters hoping Collins will don his cape again. To be fair to Collins, a quick Google on the t’interweb shows us that he’s bagged six goals in the last four months so he’s not a complete stranger to finding the onion bag.

The winning goal against Arsenal would be by far the most valuable though – as not only would it put Sutton in an FA Cup quarter-final, it would probably mean he’d never have to buy a pint in Sutton again.
