Didi Hamann: Gerrard will be a top manager one day, but Liverpool don’t need him right now

Former Red Didi Hamann doesn’t think Jurgen Klopp necessarily needs Stevie G by his side

People always say that coaches need someone with them at a team that ‘knows the history of the club.’ But sometimes it is better to start fresh, with no ties to anyone and head in with a clear mind.

Klopp didn’t have anyone with him from the club when he managed Borussia Dortmund and he was hugely successful. Things are going well for him at Liverpool and he doesn’t have anybody currently in his backroom staff that has played for the club before.

Liverpool are having plenty of success at the moment, and although there’s probably a role for Steven Gerrard somewhere, I don’t feel there is an immediate need to implement him into the club right now.

Gerrard had the talent and quality to change games and perform when the chips were down, and that’s what he’s all about. His experience is second-to-none. He has probably turned more games around in the last 10 years than any other player. It stands him in good stead, but being a top player doesn’t automatically mean you will be a top manager. He needs to see what he wants to do and make a decision over the next few months.

If he does go into managing or coaching I wouldn’t be surprised if he did perform at the very best level and become one of the best. There will be plenty of clubs vying for Steven Gerrard’s services, and there is no reason to believe he can’t be a very good coach or manager.

What do you think?
