Hotshot Jackpot Villain of the Week: Liverpool Football Club

Just 0.06% of players predicted a goalless draw...

A passionate Liverpool crowd on a European night

When you’re making your free selections for Hotshot Jackpot, there are certain bankers you come to expect. When given the option to choose for the Southampton v Liverpool game, picking a goalscorer felt like me at a breakfast buffet. Sausages? Scrambled eggs? Coutinho?? Firmino???

With £250,000 up for grabs, choosing wisely is part of the game. Jurgen Klopp’s side have already bagged 30 goals in just 12 games this season. They average 18.8 shots per game, with 7.3 of those on target. Picking a scorer in red is usually the easiest decision of the week.

Even Charlie Austin, with five league goals and eight in all competitions, was a more then respectable choice.

But no goal scorer at all? Just 0.06% of Jackpot players selected a goal-drought at St. Mary’s this week.

The most popular selection of the game was Sadio Mane, who twice went very close to opening the scoring on return to his former club.  Philippe Coutinho, Nathaniel Clyne and Roberto Firmino all missed sitters. It seemed a lot like Liverpool were doing anything and everything in their power to prevent our Hotshot lads from landing the big money.

So, this week, the entire of Liverpool Football Club are the villains. For failing to score despite 65 per cent of possession and 15 shots at the Saints net. For sitters missed, and for the thousands of punters who were on their way to bagging a quarter-of-a-million from a free game.

Two lads who have no issue with the result split our £2.5k runner-up prize. In each round of HSJP, there is a prize for the person who selects the most goal scorers if the competition has not been won. All you need to do is select the minute of the first goal in a chosen game when making your selections.

Two punters selected no goal scorer in the Saints v Liverpool match and have split the consolation prize, netting themselves £1,250k each to start the week. Nice!

  • Two of Liverpool’s last five games have now ended in goalless draws. Prior to that, there had been just one in the previous 37 under Jurgen Klopp.
  • Saints failed to register a single shot on target for the first time since December 2004, this was also against The Reds.
  • This was Liverpool’s first clean sheet in 12 Premier League matches.
  • Despite 65% possession, 15 shots with two on target, Klopp’s men failed to find the net on Saturday.
  • Just two HSJP players selected Nathan Ake to score for Bournemouth.
