Olympians head list of contenders for Queen's New Year Honours
No stranger to decadence, the Queen’s 2017 New Year Honours list will have a distinctly golden hue – in acknowledgement of the record-breaking exploits in Rio this summer.
Great Scot! Andy Murray looks a tennis shoe-in to be knighted, having secured back-to-back Olympic golds, as well as clinching his second Wimbledon title in July.
We make him 1/33 to become a knight of the medals table, and he’s unlikely to be the only Team GB member honoured.
Mo Farah has been running rings around his competitors, and the Olympic track, and is heavily odds-on to become ‘Sir Mo’ (1/16).
Golden couple Jason Kenny (4/9) and Laura Trott (20/1) are also in contention to receive the highest honour – and their kids are 25/1 to emulate their parents by winning cycling gold at a future Games.
Spokesman Paddy Power said: “It’s safe to say that Trott and Kenny’s kids won’t be needing stabilisers, and we’re taking on chances on them winning gold at the 2036 Games.
“But Murray’s been so mint that he’s got to be favourite for a knighthood. He’d go from Grand Slam to the grand-sounding SAM – Sir Andy Murray.”
