Group C concludes on Tuesday afternoon when Ukraine play Poland in Marseilles and Northern Ireland meet Germany at the Stade de France, Paris (5pm, live on BBC1).
Northern Ireland – the story so far
As things stand Northern Ireland have a reasonable chance of qualifying as one of the 4 best third placed teams. Currently sat on 3 points following victory against Ukraine, Norn Iron know that a win or a draw virtually guarantees them a place in the Round of 16. Even a loss in this game can leave them no lower than 3rd place in the group so there is everything to gain from trying to be positive in this one.
Star man Kyle Lafferty scored 7 times in qualification but is still without a goal at Euro 2016. On Thursday, West Brom man Gareth McAuley opened the scoring before Niall McGinn completed the victory with a goal in stoppage time.
Germany – the story so far
Germany currently top Group C by virtue of having scored one goal more than second placed Poland. They know that in all likelihood the group won’t just be settled by whoever wins their final game, but more importantly by how many goals they’ve scored. A win for both Germany and Poland will result in the group being decided on goals scored, so there is extra incentive to try and win the game well.
In terms of the draw for the next round, first place in the group would result in a tie against a third place team, whereas finishing second in the group would mean a tie against Switzerland. Mario Gomez may come back in for the Germans in attack, and Andre Schurrle is pushing for a first start. In defence German coach Joachim Low is unlikely to make any changes with the defence as yet unbeaten.
