Wesley Plaisier v Ryusei Azemoto – Plasier to win 3-0
Ryusei Azemoto is a debutant at the tournament, one of 14 involved this year, and I think this is a really tough task for him in the first round. Wesley Plaisier has won the tour this year and he’ll expect to win this match. He’ll also be looking to have a crack at Peter Wright in the second round too.
I fancy a comprehensive victory for Wesley and will go for a 3-0 scoreline in Plaisier’s favour.
Luke Woodhouse v Lourence Ilagan – Woodhouse to win and most 180s
This match should be a little bit closer. I’ve been impressed with Luke Woodhouse’s progress over the last couple of years. He’s taking on Lourence Ilagan, who we never really know what to expect from.
I’m sure we’ll see some big scores, and Lourence might take a set, but I’m going for Woodhouse to win the match and have most 180s, and I’ll go for a score prediction of 3-1.
Alan Soutar v Kai Gotthardt – Soutar to win 3-1
This is a really intriguing match. Kai Gotthardt’s just won the German Super League, and that takes some doing, because it’s an intense few days of action and he had to really work to book his spot at Ally Pally this year.
Alan Soutar didn’t qualify last year, but made the last 16 in the previous two years, and the big stage of the World Championship seems to bring out the best in him. I think he could go on a decent run here again. He’ll drop a set, but I think Soutar will win on a 3-1 score line.
James Wade v Jermaine Wattimena – Wattimena to win 3-2
What a clash this promises to be. It’s our only second round clash of the afternoon, James Wade taking on Jermaine Wattimena, who posted a 98 average in defeating Stefon Bellmont on Sunday night in the opening round.
Paddy Power’s traders are having a tough time splitting these, it’s a tough tie to call. Wade has lost his opening round game in the last two years and I think that’s probably where the value is because Wattimena could make that poor run continue.
I’m going to predict an upset with this match going the distance and Wattimena winning 3-2.
