7.15pm: Comito v Tricole – Comito (+2.5 Handicap)

Thibault Tricole is the overwhelming favourite to beat qualifier Joe Comito, who came through the DPA Pro Tour in Australia to book his place at the Worlds. Comito is rightly the underdog heading into this tie but needs to win just one set for this bet to land.

Frenchman Tricole is making his second appearance at the PDC World Championship, having qualified last year and made it to the second round, where he lost in straight sets to Rob Cross. He is the better player on paper, but sitting at 79th in the world, we can easily make a case for him dropping a single set against Comito.

The Australian’s average sits at 83.81 for the season, a fair way back from Tricole’s seasonal average of 90.36. However, Comito comes into this one with momentum on his side, having surged to the top spot in the DPA Tour Order of Merit to qualify for this tournament with 3 tournament wins and a 2nd place in the last 4 events of the season. His final win on the tour saw him average 93.39, and if he can match those levels here, he can certainly take a set off Tricole to land the first leg of our acca.

8.15pm: Wattimena v Bellmont – Over 3.5 Sets

With Jermaine Wattimena entering this Championship in fantastic form, backing any of the qualifiers to take a set off him looks a strange choice. Still, West Europe Qualifier winner Stefan Bellmont may pose a tougher test for ‘Machine Gun’ than many would initially expect.

Wattimena has had fantastic showings in the last 3 televised majors leading into the Worlds, finishing as the runner-up in the European Championship, and making the latter stages of both the Grand Slam of Darts and the Players Championship Finals. He is now up to number 36 in the world, and he will fancy his chances of a run to at least the 4th round here.

However, there were easier draws available for his first-round matchup than Stefan Bellmont. The Swiss player is making his 1st appearance at the Worlds, also becoming the 1st player from his nation to feature at this event. He is no stranger to playing the best, having taken part in 24 of the 30 Players Championship events this season, despite not holding a Tour Card.

Bellmont managed runs to the quarter-finals of those Players Championship events twice, including a run in PC 8 where he knocked out Michael Smith, Mensur Suljovic and Rob Cross, only being stopped by Gian van Veen. With a 12th-placed finish on the Challenge Tour, Bellmont has had a great year and will fancy his chances of taking at least a set off of Wattimena.

9.15pm: Huybrechts v Barry – Huybrechts to Win

We’re concluding our acca by backing the experienced Kim Huybrechts to beat 22-year-old Keane Barry, who qualified via the PDC Development Tour. Barry had been touted as one of the best young prospects, but this season has been a disappointment, with first-round losses at both the World Series of Darts Finals and the Grand Slam of Darts in recent months.

Barry did make a run to the last 16 of the UK Open earlier this year but has shown little since then to suggest another unexpected run could be on the horizon. The youngster has now qualified for 6 PDC World Championships but has made it past the first round just twice, squeezing past Royden Lam of Hong Kong 3-2 with an average of 83.59 in 2022, and beating Filipino player Reynaldo Rivera with an average of 86.68 in 2022.

Huybrechts’ best days are certainly behind him, but the 2-time Premier League participant and former World Championship quarter-finalist will be confident of making it to at least the 2nd round for the 7th year in a row. Do not be put off by Huybrechts’ seasonal win percentage of 48%, with a large chunk of the year being completely derailed by an arm injury.

The Belgian has done well to come back so strongly from having surgery on his collarbone, and with an impressive 6-1 demolition of Wessel Nijman in the first round of the Players Championship Finals just last month – Nijman being a player many are tipping to go far at the Worlds – Huybrechts has shown he can still mix it with the best on his day. We expect him to have far too much for an underperforming Barry here.
