Winner: Luke Littler
Luke Littler is the bookmakers’ favourite to win the 2025 PDC World Darts Championship, and it’s hard to look past the teenage sensation that is going all the way. ‘The Nuke’ took the Alexandra Palace by storm 12 months ago with a remarkable run to the final, only to lose to eventual winner Luke Humphries.
He has since racked up a total of 10 titles in 2024, most notably lifting the Premier League and Grand Slam of Darts.
That trophy haul is made all the more impressive by Littler’s mightily impressive seasonal average of 99.26, not to mention his record tally of 800 maximums this year so far.
While a potential semi-final showdown with defending champion Humphries would be a big obstacle to overcome, Littler looks the likeliest contender to lift the prestigious Sid Waddell trophy.
Dark Horse: Gary Anderson
Gary Anderson is well-placed to reignite his love affair with the Alexandra Palace at the 2025 World Darts Championship. ‘The Flying Scotsman’ has consistently shown throughout 2024 that he still possesses the magic that propelled him to back-to-back World Championship triumphs in 2015 and 2016.
Since the beginning of the year, Anderson has won a hat-trick of PDC ranking titles, and his average of 99.86 is the highest of any player on the PDC circuit in 2024.
Housed in the fourth quarter of the draw, a potential round of 16 showdown with old rival Michael van Gerwen may prove decisive for Anderson’s prospects. If Anderson can derail the ‘Green Machine’, then a third-world crown would certainly be within the realms of possibility for the Scottish icon.
Longshot: Chris Dobey
With form and a favourable draw, Chris Dobey looks underrated for World Darts Championship glory. ‘Hollywood’ is one of the most in-form players heading into this year’s annual showpiece.
His seasonal average of 97.18 is bettered only by Gary Anderson, Luke Littler and Luke Humphries. Dobey also sits in the top 10 for 180s scored this calendar year, having hit 461 maximums.
Michael Smith is the highest-ranked player in Dobey’s bracket of the draw; however, ‘Bully Boy’s’ struggles for consistency throughout 2024 make him a vulnerable favourite for quarter 3 honours.
In contrast, Dobey has been a steady hand at the oche this season, not to mention he dispatched Smith at the last 16 stage 12 months ago. If Dobey can repeat that feat this year in their potential rematch, he can go deep in the competition.
