Anderson v Van Leuven – Anderson -3.5 legs

It has been more than five years since Gary Anderson lifted his last major title at the World Cup of Darts, but the Flying Scotsman is living up to his nickname in Wolverhampton, averaging 108 through two games.

Anderson is the second-favourite behind Luke Littler to win the Grand Slam for the first time, and it is hard to argue with that assessment. Nobody has a better average than the 53-year-old in 2024, and there are signs that he is bringing his floor form to the big stage.

He said he didn’t feel good in his victory over Michael van Gerwen. If he can hit five 180s and average 105 when he is not at his best, then there is not much hope for Noa-Lynn van Leuven, who has already been whitewashed once at this event and could be on the end of another drubbing on Tuesday.

It was 6-0 to Anderson when the two met on the Pro Tour in May. Van Leuven would do well to avoid another heavy defeat.

Wattimena v Suljovic – Wattimena to win match, have most 180s & highest checkout

Having blitzed his way through his first two matches, Jermaine Wattimena is almost certain to top Group E. He will want to make sure he does, otherwise, he could be staring Littler in the face in the second round.

Mensur Suljovic’s race is run. He played well in the loss to Michael Smith but was well off the pace against Mike De Decker on Sunday, averaging just 78 and hitting no maximums.

The Austrian is an inconsistent player these days, hence his world ranking of 57, and it is difficult to see where he would find the belief to compete with Wattimena. I expect the Dutchman to dominate in all departments.

Littler v Ilagan – Littler -3.5 leg handicap

Littler has only lost one leg in the tournament and has yet to play his easiest opponent on paper. It would be a massive task for a lower-ranked player to get close to The Nuke in this mood, let alone someone without a Tour Card.

Lourence Ilagan scored reasonably well in his defeats by Dimitri Van den Bergh and Keane Barry but hit just four out of 27 attempted darts at a double. Opportunities on the outer ring will be few and far between against Littler, and there is no evidence of him being able to take those chances in this environment.

Under no pressure, with his qualifications secured, Littler should enjoy himself on stage, and he’ll aim to lay down a marker before the knockouts begin.
