Premier League of Darts – Night Six

Fresh off the back of the UK Open at weekend, the relentless Premier League juggernaut rolls into Brighton for Night Six. Surely you’re bored of it by now? Nah, me neither.

Of the eight Premier League hopefuls, Luke Humphries had the best weekend in Minehead, losing to Dimitri van den Bergh in a closely-fought final. Luke Littler and Rob Cross were the best of the rest, each reaching the Quarter Final stage.

The Premier League table is starting to take shape, which isn’t great news for Peter Wright at the moment – although all five points in Brighton could well lift him off the bottom. A fruitless Night Five for Michael van Gerwen means that the gap to the top is reduced to six points, but the Dutchman will still be sitting top whatever happens this week.

7.15pm: Humphries v Price – Humphries Most 180s & Win

Humphries and Price sit in sixth and seventh in the table currently, though it’s a bit of a false position for both. Humphries ranks third for Leg Difference and fourth for Legs Won, so has been a bit unlucky not to pick up more points so far.

Price has struggled in the Premier League, but ranks 5th for averages in 2024. Both are still odds-on to make Finals Night at the O2. I don’t think Price’s surge for the Top 4 starts tonight, though.

Humphries is starting to get back to the sort of form which we saw at the back end of 2023 and should have too much for the Iceman here. The Welshman has only hit the most 180s in two of his matches, averaging 0.23 per leg.

Humphries has averaged 0.34 per leg, with the most maximums in eight of his nine games. With Humphries a decent favourite for the match, him to Win and Have The Most 180s looks a good bet.

7.45pm: Cross v van Gerwyn – Over 9.5 Legs

He might not quite be within striking distance of MvG just yet, but Voltage has put himself in a good position following a run to last week’s final, and looked in decent nick on Saturday in the UK Open. MvG appeared to struggle with his shoulder injury in defeat to Mensur Suljovic at the weekend and there may be some concern for him going into this one.

Rob Cross is playing some very good darts at the moment, and you may well fancy him to beat MvG here. Either way, I’m expecting a close one but am sitting on the fence and backing 10 or more legs to go in the acca.

8.15pm: Aspinall v Littler – Both to Hit 3+ 180s Each

The third match of the evening throws up clash which absolutely no-one is calling the Damon Heta derby, after the Aussie knocked both of them out of the UK Open at the weekend. Littler and Heta put on a show, both averaging over 104 in an 10-8 thriller.

Nathan Aspinall is flying high after reaching back-to-back Premier League finals, including claiming all five points last time out in Exeter. Luke Littler has been more consistent throughout the tournament and had won at least five legs in every Premier League match before his 6-3 defeat to Cross last week.

It would take a brave person to bet against either of these on Thursday night, so I’ll be spinelessly avoiding the Match Odds market yet again here. I fully expect a close one, with Over 9.5 Legs at Evs or better a great pick for any acca, but for a slightly bigger price I’d be looking at both players to hit 3+ 180s Each, a feat which they’ve each achieved in 70% of their matches so far.

8.45pm: Smith v Wright – Both to Hit 3+ 180s Each

You felt that if Peter Wright was going to break into the Top 7 of the Premier League this year, he needed a win over Aspinall last week. Any faint hope left for Snakebite surely rides on this clash with Michael Smith, who picked up all seven of his points in his first four matches, failing to register a win since.

Peter Wright’s form has improved in the last few weeks, and he should give Smith a decent game here (although I’m not sure I’d back him in the Handicap (+1.5) market at the current price. He gave the great Stephen Bunting a scare at the weekend and has definitely improved his scoring, averaged 0.3 180s per leg in Minehead after hitting nine in his last two PL matches.

Smith remains a pretty consistent scorer, hitting at least three 180s in six of his last seven and I reckon three each here is a decent bet. The winner of Smith v Wright looks unlikely to get much further, with Luke Littler or the in-form Nathan Aspinall awaiting them in the semi-final.

In fact, I’d be looking at Luke Littler at 3/1 to finally get his first nightly win on the board. It’s so tough to call the top half of the draw, but 10/1 on Littler to beat Humphries in the final would be my pick in the straight forecast.
