Premier League – Night Five

The Premier League Darts travels to Exeter for Night Five of the league phase. After a third consecutive victory last week, Michael van Gerwen sits comfortably atop the Premier League table, eight points clear of Michael Smith and Luke Littler.

The remaining seven players can all consider themselves members of the chasing pack for now, with Michael Smith closer to Peter Wright at the foot of the table than he is to MvG at the summit. As the old saying goes, you can’t win the Premier League Darts on Night Five in Exeter, so the Dutchman won’t be getting too far ahead of himself. Only the small matter of the World Champion is up next.

Luke Humphries v Michael van Gerwen – Over 9.5 Total Legs

Having won nine matches in a row, MvG is a pretty strong favourite against Luke Humphries in the opener. The two have met once already in the Premier League this year, with van Gerwen claiming a 6-5 victory in Night Three’s final.

Humphries has had a fairly disappointing start to 2024 by his own high standards but is unlucky to have amassed only five points so far in the Premier League. Since a poor showing on Night One, he’s averaged over 100 in every match and won at least five legs, losing a last-leg-decider on each night. He’s got enough to beat MvG here, but the current odds for at least 10 legs looks like a great bet to kick off Night Five’s acca.

(9.5)

Nathan Aspinall v Peter Wright – Over 5.5 Total 180s

Peter Wright has had a torrid time of it so far in the Premier League, but he put that all behind him with a scintillating display against Luke Littler last week, with six 180s and a 103 average. He’s been showing signs of a return to form with some good performances on the pro tour of late, so last week was not simply a flash in the pan.

I might make Wright a slight favourite for this one (there’s some value in his odds to win anyway) if it wasn’t for Aspinall’s run to the final last week. The Asp impressed against Cross and MvG last week and has scored reliably throughout the Premier League so far. Expecting this one to be a close affair, the 180s line for both players looks generous here, with 6+ in the match looking a particularly appealing price.

(5.5)

Gerwyn Price v Rob Cross – Over 9.5 Total Legs

Price and Cross will face each other for a second time, following a comfortable 6-2 victory for Price on Night One. Cross leapfrogged Price in the table following victory over Luke Humphries last week, battling back from 5-3 down in true Rob Cross style.

Neither player has shown the sort of consistency we would expect from them, so this should be another closely fought affair. Gerwyn Price is a decent favourite for this one and I wouldn’t put anyone off the odds on Most 180s & Win but with both players blowing hot and cold at times this year, Total Legs looks a safer bet for the acca here.

    (9.5)

      Michael Smith

Luke Littler v Michael Smith – Luke Littler to have the Highest Checkout & Win Match

The last quarter-final of the night sees Luke Littler taking on Michael Smith, a game which Smith won 6-5 on Night One, despite a 105 average from The Nuke. Littler is a heavy favourite for this one, with Smith still searching for the sort of form that made him World Champion just over a year ago. Littler has averaged over 100 in the Premier League so far, with Smith managing just 96.

Littler reeled in the Big Fish in a sensational match against Peter Wright last week, taking him to a 130+ checkout in three matches so far, and at least 90 in each of his last six. Smith has managed just the one 130+ checkout (a 170 of his own on Night Two), exceeding 90 in just four of his seven games. I expect more of the same from Littler in this one, with Highest Checkout & Win Match an appealing even-money shot.
