Premier League – Night Four

Michael van Gerwen sits three points clear at the top of the Premier League table after consecutive nightly wins in Berlin and Glasgow. At the other end of the table, Nathan Aspinall and Peter Wright are setting up a gripping two-horse race for the wooden spoon, with both yet to pick up a win.

The Premier League heads to Newcastle for Night Four, with the fixture computer throwing up four as-yet-unseen matchups in the Quarter-Finals.

Michael Smith v Nathan Aspinall – Over 6.5 180s

Michael Smith sits second in the Premier League table despite many – including me – doubting his credentials this year after a tough end to 2023. Bully Boy has hit 23 180s in his six Premier League matches so far, just shy of 4 per game.

Nathan Aspinall is a bit unlucky to find himself pointless after three weeks, having surrendered early leads against van Gerwen and Humphries in the last two nights. I’d expect another close one here and certainly wouldn’t rule out a 6-5 in either direction. The Asp has hit ten 180s in his three matches so far, and with the prospect of plenty of legs in this match, Over 6.5 180s between them looks like a good price here.

Rob Cross v Luke HumphriesLuke Humphries to have the most 180s & Win Match

Since defeat to Luke Littler on Night One, Luke Humphries has registered a 100+ average in each of his last five Premier League games. He’s hit 24 180s in his six matches so far, with the Littler match the only one in which he failed to hit four or more. Just looking at the Total 180s lines, 10/11 looks a decent price for Over 3.5 in this one.

Rob Cross has looked tough to beat as always in this year’s Premier League but is yet to produce a ton-plus average (he’s only averaged over 95 twice), so expect Cool Hand to have too much for him in this one. With Cross one of the lower scorers in the Premier League lineup, Humphries Most 180s & Win looks a good bet at just short of even money.

Peter Wright v Luke Littler – Luke Littler to have the most 180s, highest checkout, & Win Match

Of the eight Premier League players, Peter Wright gave the best showing in the Players Championships this week, reaching the quarter-finals on Monday and the semi-finals on Tuesday. However, he’s still not registering the sort of numbers required to win on the Premier League stage, with only one 100+ average – his first since October!

Luke Littler has looked impressive throughout the tournament, with four 100+ averages in his six matches so far. Despite Wright’s improving form, Littler’s relentless consistency and strong 180-hitting should make for a pretty comfortable win for the youngster.

Littler has also managed three ton-plus finishes in his six games so far, with a high checkout of at least 85 in every game. Wright’s highest checkout of the Premier League so far is 68, managing just three above 40 all tournament.

Gerwyn Price v Michael van GerwenOver 9.5 Legs

Having won each of the last two nights, MvG has soared to the top of the Premier League standings, beating every player he’s faced so far. The only man he’s yet to beat is his opponent in Newcastle on Night Four, Gerwyn Price.

Despite a solid run of form, MvG hasn’t been winning convincingly, with six of his seven matches seeing Over 9.5 legs. Gerwyn Price has the highest average of all the Premier League hopefuls over the last 12 months (98.75), so he is more than capable of stopping MvG’s winning run here. I wouldn’t put anyone off backing Price at 6/5 but certainly expect ten or more legs and a close contest here.

Night Four Outright – Luke Humphries

The winner of Price and MvG will likely take on Luke Littler in the semi-final in Newcastle. None of those three will be pleased with how the draw has worked out for them this week. Luke Humphries, on the other hand, has a relatively kind run to the final in the other half of the draw, making Humphries to win Night Four look a really good bet at 4/1.
