We’ve hit the bullseye with our new Paddy Power World Darts Championship Christmas ad

Ziggy played guitar.... and darts at Christmas, naturally

We’ve skidded sideways into the annual festive battle for the most ‘heartwarming’ Christmas ad – with a twist, of course – to kick off our sponsorship of the World Darts Championship at the Ally Pally.

Arriving stylishly late to the battle for the best Christmas ad, but bang on time for the biggest darts tournament on the planet which starts on Friday, the ad begins with a mature couple making their final preparations for the festive season.

“It’ll be here before you know it,” Beryl excitedly beams at her silver-haired husband George as the pair look to their calendar, counting down the days to the most wonderful time of the year.

When asked ‘how’s dad’ whilst on a video call to her daughter, Beryl replies with laughter: “Oh you know, like a kid! He’s out buying himself a new outfit.”

The couple can be seen dressing their Christmas tree and preparing presents.

Later, sitting by the warmth of their fire, surrounded by flickering candles and festive lighting, they reflect together on the fact that they have just one more day to wait.

“It’ll be good to see everyone,” her hubby chuckles in anticipation.

The scene quickly skips to the following morning as Beryl is seen stealing a peek out through the net front curtains of their home.

“They’re here! Come on,” she excitedly announces.

Off-screen we hear her expectant husband ask how he looks, and she turns, taking in the view with immense pride, to lovingly reassure him that he looks very handsome.

Suddenly viewers are snapped out of the fuzzy festive glow as Chase The Sun – a song recognised as the soundtrack to every major darts tournament ever – interrupts and the camera flashes to the front door as the elderly husband emerges dressed from head-to-toe as Ziggy Stardust.

He’s met by his cheering band of merry darts fans, also in fancy dress, but as he attempts his ascent of his front porch, George hesitates.

“I should have worn my flat shoes,” he mutters, shaking his head.

However, committed to his costume, he gleefully totters down his front path in red leather platform knee-high boots with his troupe, all destined to enjoy ‘the most wonderful time of the year’ at the Paddy Power World Darts Championship at London’s Alexandra Palace.

The script was crafted and directed in-house.

“We’re having a pop at the multimillion Christmas TV ads by hitting the bullseye with this masterpiece in celebration of the most wonderful time of the year,” a jolly Paddy ho-ho-ho-ed as he pulled up his Mario dungarees and wrote something potentially libelous on a piece of cardboard for later.
