It’s England v Germany in the first of tonight’s semifinals as Michael Smith aims to reach back-to-back finals in his bid to become world champion for the first time against Gabriel Clemens.
Smith hasn’t really impressed much this tournament, however. He’s not throwing the same amount of 180s that got him to the final last year, and he was fairly lucky last time out against Stephen Bunting, only averaging 91.63 and he only hit six 180s in total. If Bunting’s doubles had been better we could have been looking at a different result.
He’s worth taking on here, particularly given Clemens’ form. He was brilliant when beating Gerwyn Price 5-1, averaging 99.54. He threw eight 180s and his checkout average was over 34 per cent. He only lost one set in his previous game too.
The German is a man in form, and if he maintains his form he can beat Smith, just like he did in the Players Championship match last year. Clemens to win kicks off tonight’s double.
In the second match, it’s all about Michael van Gerwen. He was in great form last night, winning 5-0 against Chris Dobey and only losing three legs. He wasn’t even at his best, although he did average 102 and just the five 180s too.
He should blow away Dimitri van den Bergh here, who again is a little lucky to be here because if Jonny Clayton’s doubles had been on point he should have won. MVG then should have plenty in the bag here so we’re backing him to land the most 180s here.
