We’ve got an action-packed few weeks of sport over the festive period and one of the highlights is the return of the PDC World Dart Championship.
Here to look at some of the contenders and a potential winner of the whole thing is PPTV’s Rob Catterson…
Peter Wright is the defending champion after winning for the second time last year, prior to that Gerwyn Price was champion. But the forgotten man for many over the last couple of years has been the star of 2022, Michael Van Gerwen, and he is our pick to take home the Sid Waddell Trophy.
He’s been world champion three times, and he’s dominated all year. He won the World Matchplay, the World Grand Prix, the Premier League and the Players Championship. Van Gerwen, there’s no doubt about it, is back to his best.

He’s got the hunger back, he’s got the fear back and we reckon MVG has every chance of being re-crowned World Champion for the first time since 2019.
He’s been given a good draw as well, which means that he could have a fairly straightforward path to the semi-final and if he gets that far he’s going to be very, very difficult to beat. Michael Van Gerwen is our main selection to win this year’s PDC World Darts Championship.
If you’re looking for a bit of value and someone of a higher price, well, look no further than James Wade. He’s made the semi-finals three times, including last year.
He’s had a troubled couple of years but seems now to be back to his best. At one stage, he was the man to fear back when Phil Taylor was dominating the sport.
Wade has won everything in the world of darts – except for a World Championship. He’s a hefty price, but finds himself in a favourable side of the draw and he’s got a good chance of getting to at least the semis and beyond. He’s a good price for a value pick for the final at London’s Alexandra Palace on January 3.
