13:30: Jason Heaver v Gordon Mathers – Over 7.5 180s

Two evenly matched players here should lead to a tight game and if we go a long way as expected we’ll see a lot of 180s. Both players have shown good maximum hitting form on the tour this year and they can continue this on the big stage. The price for them to hit eight or more 180s is attractive in a game I expect to go all the way.

19:00: Martijn Kleermaker v John Michael – Kleermaker Most 180s, High Checkout and Win Match

The big Dutchman will be looking to make up for lost time here having missed out on making his debut last year due to a positive covid test. He has had a good year on tour and can dominate this game against the Greek No.1, who is yet to win a match on the Alexandra Palace stage in three attempts. It’s a game where Kleermaker should have too much for his opponent and the price is fair.

20:00: Florian Hempel v Martin Schindler – Schindler to Win 3-2

This battle of the Germans should be one of the games of the first round between two players who are coming off very impressive years on tour. Both rank in the top 30 in their average this year and the winner will give Dimitri van den Bergh plenty of trouble in the second round. Schindler’s extra big stage experience will prove vital and he can just get over the line in a 3-2 win.

21:00: Fallon Sherrock v Steve Beaton – Sherrock Most 180s and to Win Match

The Queen of the Palace makes this possibly the most anticipated of all the first round games. Steve Beaton makes his 31st consecutive World Championship appearance but this is a draw all the players would have wanted to avoid. Sherrock showed sensational form at the Grand Slam of Darts recently and if she can reach that level here, she can get the win. Her 180 hitting was very impressive in that tournament so the price on Sherrock to hit most 180s and win looks solid.
