Sunday 8.30am: India v England
Cricket World Cup Group Match at Ekana Sports City, Lucknow
TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Cricket
India to win
India are favourites for this match and tournament form makes it clear why. But, digging slightly deeper, India’s outstanding bowling and England’s woeful batting have contributed to their contrasting fortunes. Through the middle overs India’s bowlers have been dominant at squeezing their opponents. They have conceded just 4.83 runs per over – the only team to go under 5, while the English middle order averages just 27.53 – the third worst of teams at the World Cup. We’ll kick off with an easy one; India to win.
Yadav and Rashid to take 2+ wickets each
In the tournament so far, spin bowling has been tough to get away at Lucknow. The tricky nature of the surface combined with the large playing area has seen spin go at an economy of just 4.65 – which is the lowest economy for spin or pace at any ground in the competition. Spin is set to play a big part in the match, with this in mind Kuldeep Yadav and Adil Rashid to take 2+ wickets each has a good chance.

India to have a higher score after 15 overs
England have been wasteful with the new ball and have the highest economy rate during the powerplay (6.52). This is personified by the alarming decline of Chris Woakes. During the 2019 World Cup he averaged 32 in the powerplay conceding 4.1 runs per over.
However, in this World Cup these figures have shot up to an average of 113 at 7.5 rpo. Woakes may well not play in this game but England’s powerplay struggles are widespread with runs easy to come by for India’s top order. It’s got to be India to have a higher score after 15 overs.
Virat Kohli to be India’s top run-scorer
Virat Kohli has been in superb form at his home World Cup, scoring 354 runs in five innings at 118. Only once has he failed to reach 50. This hasn’t been without luck, however. Firstly, he was chaperoned generously to his century against Bangladesh but also chances to dismiss him haven’t been taken. Kohli has played 31 false shots during the tournament without being dismissed by any of them.
The tournament average for false shots per dismissal is 9.2, and Jos Buttler has been fallen to every 1.8 false shots he has played (nine false shots – five wickets). Kohli is clearly in form, but for whatever reason, perhaps the roar of the home crowd, luck is also on his side. The way things are going, Kohli to be India’s top run-scorer feels a smart punt.
Malan to score over 29.5 runs
There haven’t been many moments for England to celebrate during this campaign but one of them was Dawid Malan’s brilliant 140 against Bangladesh. Malan has a productive record in internationals in India. Across ODIs and T20is in the country he averages 47.66 which is impressive. He has been one of the few positives in the tournament for England, so Malan is a good shout to score over 29.5 runs.
