India v New Zealand
ICC World Cup – Mumbai
TV – Sunday, October 22: 9:30AM – Sky Sports Cricket

India to Win

Since the 2015 World Cup India have a strong ODI record against New Zealand at home, winning eight of the 11 matches played and of the three losses two were by a margin of fewer than 20 runs. India’s dominance at home is well-documented and they have begun this World Cup in imposing fashion. India to win and maintain their perfect start.

Shubman Gill to be top India Runscorer

Shubman Gill has had a relatively quiet start to this World Cup in comparison to some of his team mates but his record against New Zealand is outstanding. In eight ODI innings he averages 80.66, striking at 110. New Zealand will have his incredible 208 fresh in the memory, and during that three-match series earlier this year the Indian batsman scored a remarkable 360 runs off only 280 balls. Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli all average above 50 in ODIs against the Black Caps, but Shubman may be the top performer here. Subman to be India’s top run-scorer.

Tom Latham to be top New Zealand’s Runscorer

Devon Conway has somewhat fallen away since his magnificent 152* in the opening match against England. However his record against India will cause the hosts to be concerned. He averages 54.25 in five innings, but only once has he passed 50. A better tip for New Zealand’s top run-scorer would be captain Tom Latham. He has only batted twice at the tournament so far but has passed 50 on both occasions, but add to this his excellent history against India. He averages 54.43, a shade above Conway, but this is from 20 innings. Importantly, Latham’s average when playing in India hardly drops (52.77). Latham could be the man to anchor his side’s innings and contribute the most.

No century scored in the 1st innings

Dharamsala has only hosted seven ODIs (India v South Africa in 2020 was abandoned without a ball bowled) and in those seven matches only twice has a century been scored in the first innings. These are Kohli’s hundred against West Indies in 2014 and Dawid Malan’s 140 against Bangladesh earlier in this tournament. With this in mind history suggests it unlikely a batsman will score a century in the first innings here.

India to have the highest opening partnership

New Zealand have tried two opening pairs so far in the tournament (Devon Conway and Will Young for three matches and Conway and Rachin Ravindra for the other) but neither combination has quite yet come off. So far the Black Caps openers average 29.75 for the first wicket, with a highest stand of 67 against the Netherlands. India, on the other hand have enjoyed much more success at the top of the innings, with Rohit Sharma being joined by Shubman as well as Ishan Kishan. They average more than double their opponents before the first drop, 67.25. India to have the highest opening partnership.
