The Short-price punt
England To Win 4th Test
Once again it is win or lose the urn for England as they head to Manchester for the fourth Test of what has already been an epic Ashes series. Old Trafford has been a happy recent hunting ground for England and Brendon McCullum’s team will be confident they can continue their recent strong form at the venue.
In England’s last 13 Tests in Manchester, they have won 11 with a draw and just a single loss. Most of those wins have been dominant with four innings wins and three more by 170-plus runs, along with a six-wicket victory. Last year’s Test against South Africa is perhaps the most telling. They rattled the Proteas for 151, declared at 415 and then knocked the Saffers over for 179.

Australia have performed better than any visiting nation at Old Trafford, winning in 2019 and posting draws in 2013 and 2005. This is one of the better England teams they have faced though and with everything on the line it would surprise if England weren’t laser focused here.
England have named the same squad as that which one in Leeds and it is unlikely we will see many changes. Jimmy Anderson performed so well at Old Trafford last year he could be recalled for the out-of-sorts Ollie Robinson but there is a stability with England that Australia do not have. There is a push to drop Dave Warner, effectively ending his decorated Test career, while Scott Boland is almost certain to be replaced by Josh Hazelwood. The lack of faith shown in Todd Murphy last Test was also a worry from an Australian perspective.
Confidence is high that this fabulous Ashes series is about to be levelled.
The Value
Ben Stokes Top England 1st Innings Run Scorer
England skipper Ben Stokes has a tremendous record at Old Trafford and few players thrive on pressure as much as the Kiwi born captain so he looks a great bet to score big in Manchester. Stokes averages 52.80 with the bat at the ground – 16.31 runs greater than his overall average – with two centuries and an unbeaten 78 in his last six innings there.
With scores of 80 and 155 in the last two Tests, Stokes is rediscovering his best form and looks huge value to top the England runscoring.
The Longshot
Jimmy Anderson Player of the Match
Anderson was rested last Test and had performed well below par in the opening two but looks a good bet to have a big influence on this Test. He was outstanding jagging three wickets in each innings last time and his 37 wickets at 22.02 is 4.2 runs lower than his overall average. If bowling dominates this Test – and it certainly can at his home ground of Old Trafford – Anderson can win man of the match honours.
