July 6-10: England v Australia
Australia lead series 2-0
Ashes 3rd Test, Headingly
TV: Sky Sports
Following the controversial Second Test at Lord’s that turned into not only one of the most memorable of Tests, but a philosophical debate on the laws of cricket v the spirit of cricket, England are down 2-0 with Australia just a drawn Test away from retaining the urn.
The Banker
England to Win 3rd Test
It is do or die now for England, a spot they certainly did not expect to find themselves in after two Tests. The ramifications have been stunning with the much-lauded Bazball era being widely criticised as unnecessarily reckless and the team rightly being criticised for their outrage following the ‘unusual’ Jonny Bairstow dismissal in the last Test.
While Australia have won the first two Tests, England were well in contention in both. With the series on the line at Headingley, and a steel that will likely come from the controversial final day at Lord’s, they appear value to take this Test.

While team changes have not been announced at writing, Moeen Ali almost certainly returns while it would not surprise to see one or both of Mark Wood and Chris Woakes join the team. Australia have lost Nathan Lyon, who played 100 straight Tests, with recent debutant Todd Murphy joining the team.
England have a very good recent record at Headingley with wins in the last four Tests at the venue including the famous one-wicket win over the Australians the last Ashes Test played. Two of those Tests have been by an innings or more. Ben Stokes’ team will maintain their aggression and with Australia’s most reliable spin option gone this looks a good situation for the home team to Win.
The Value
Jonny Bairstow To Score 50+ 1st Innings Runs
Jonny Bairstow owes England. He knows it. The team knows it, even if they don’t publicly say it. Regardless of where you stand on the spirit of the game, it was not a smart move to wander out of your crease with a game on the line. A hard-nosed player, he will dig in as the series returns north to his native Yorkshire.
Bairstow has a great recent record at the ground, scoring 162 and an unbeaten 71 against New Zealand last summer. He averages 63 at the ground and with the series on the line and a renewed focus he looks set for a big first innings and Bairstow Is Value To Score 50+ Runs.
The Longshot
Travis Head To Score 100+ 1st Innings Runs
Travis Head does not get the plaudits of more-established teammates but he has been enjoying a very good tour of England. He set up Australia’s Test championship win with a big 162 and in his four Ashes innings he has two 50s. Head is a very good player of spin and in his form makes Head a very good bet To Score 100+ 1st Innings Runs.
