Harry Brook Most England 1st innings runs
Harry Brook 1st innings century
Chris Woakes to be Man of The Match
Chris Woakes Most England 1st Innings Wickets
Joe Root and Ollie Pope to each score 25+ runs in 1st Innings
Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon to each take 2+ wickets in 1st Innings

What a way to start the ashes summer with a crunching drive for four by Zak Crawley and it ending with a four from Australian captain Pat Cummins. What happened in between will be remembered as one of the greatest Test’s in recent times.

England declaring on day 1 will be spoken about for a long time, with Joe Root on 118 not out and going great guns. No breakthrough came in the remaining overs on day one and Australia’s 1st innings was held together by a magnificent 141 from Usman Khawaja.

June 28 – July 2: England v Australia
Ashes 2nd Test, Lord’s
TV: Sky Sports

The 3rd day started with Root trying to reverse scoop Cummins to huge roars from the crowd. He made no contact with the ball but the tone was set. England played their usual attacking way regardless of the scoreboard.

Runs came fast but wickets kept falling at timely intervals for Australia to keep them in the game. 25,000 tickets were sold on day 4 ahead of day 5 and it had a real 2005 feel to it, will Australia chase it or will England get the win?

Khawaja proved to be the key wicket again, but finally he fell to Stokes with the hosts now looking on top and back to favourites. Alex Carey came and went caught and bowled by Root and the crowd started to believe, however it was not to be the 2005 heroic ending for England with Cummins coming in with 73 needed and hitting a gutsy 44 not out to see Australia take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Harry Brook

Looking ahead to the 2nd test, England have called up Rehan Ahmed the 18 year old leg spinner who famously had a cricket masterclass off the great late Shane Warne when he was 13. Ahmed will cover for Moeen Ali who could barely bowl in 2nd innings due to a blister on his main spinning finger.

One player who caught my eye was Harry Brook. With scores of 32 and 46 it doesn’t look spectacular but that was his first red ball game in a long time. Brook to get the Most England 1st Innings Runs or a 1st Innings Century bets look very fair prices.

Chris Woakes

Chris Woakes

James Anderson was on record after the match saying the pitches need to change dramatically if he’s to have an impact on this series. With that being said, I wonder if England turn to Mark Wood or Chris Woakes at Lord’s. I think it’s worth taking a chance on Chris Woakes as bets will be void if he’s not selected.

His record at Lord’s is sublime. Having played five matches he has 27 wickets at an average of 11.33, he also averages 61 with the bat with his highest ever Test score occurring at the home of cricket with 137 not out. Woakes to be Man of The Match and him to get Most England 1st Innings Wickets are both very backable.

#WhatOddsPaddy

The final selections I like going into the 2nd Test are Joe Root and Ollie Pope to each score 25+ runs and Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon to each take 2+ wickets (all 1st inns) found in the #WhatOddsPaddy market. Root looks in his imperious touch and Ollie Pope also looked really good his 1st innings for 31 before falling.

Lyon looks menacingly dangerous as he usually does. Cummins didn’t feature in the wickets in 1st innings at Edgbaston but, after taking four in the 2nd innings and hitting the winning runs, confidence will be high. The Lord’s slope and normal, more favouring swing conditions, should see him much more in the game here from the off.

Let’s hope the 2nd test matches the 1st and we’ll be in for 5 brilliant days again!
