It doesn’t get much bigger than this, they’re fierce-old rivals and obviously we’ve got The Ashes coming up after so this will be like an appetiser before the main event. England are well placed within the group, they’ve looked really good actually with their powerful batting line up.
I think, looking at this fixture, that they’ve probably got too much muscle for Australia. David Warner’s badly out of form, Steve Smith is a step too slow for T20 cricket these days up against Jos Buttler, Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow. I think England will probably have too much for Australia.
Saturday 3pm: England v Australia TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Cricket
I’m a big Jos Buttler fan for this tournament, I think he’ll finish as England’s leading run-scorer. I think he plays spin really well. He’s had a lot of experience in these conditions in the IPL, but for this game up against this Australia attack, I’m coming back to Dawid Malan to be England’s Top Batsman.
I know he’s been criticised for his ability to play in the Sub Continent, but cricket’s all about matchups and playing against Australia’s pace attack, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, playing pace will be key. I think Dawid Malan will come into his own, I think he’ll go under the radar a little bit here.
People don’t expect him to succeed at this World Cup but against that attack he’ll do well. He made 28 not out against Bangladesh, he looked pretty good nick and I think, with pace back on against him, he’ll really thrive.
I think he’s just about the value play, nothing against Jos Buttler or Jason Roy. This is a scenario for Malan to come good and he loves to play that anchor role so that the other guys can be aggressive around him. That’s ideal for a Top Batsman bet.
I’m going with Mitchell Marsh to be Australia’s Top Batsman. David Warner looks badly out of touch to me and I think England can get at him with pace. Aaron Finch hasn’t had a lot of cricket, Steve Smith batting at No.4 is probably a spot too low for him and Glen Maxwell at No.5 is a spot too low for him.
Mitchell Marsh is inked in at No.3, had a really good series against Bangladesh, plays spin well, plays pace well. He’s priced up behind Warner and Finch so I think he’s the value play.
