Ok, so this wasn’t really a great surprise. Katie Taylor – the Olympic and World Championship gold medal winner – was making her pro debut inside the ring against Polish opponent Karina Kopinska. Kopinska had only won seven of her previous 24 bouts, so although we don’t claim to know a whole lot about women’s professional boxing we could still tell you that she was about to put in a Saturday night performance as impressive as Honey G.
Unsurprisingly Katie Taylor was a 1/100 shot as the fight got underway, and duly obliged with a third round stoppage – a snip of value at 2/1 for anyone who got on.
In her interview afterwards, Taylor admitted she was hoping for a first round KO, and then said what we were all thinking about her challenger.
‘I was hoping for a first round knock-out to be honest, but that girl has only been stopped once before so it was a very good performance, but she wasn’t really up to much,’ said Taylor. ‘Hopefully this is the start. The dream would be boxing for the world title in Dublin.’
With loud-mouth promoter Eddie Hearn by her side, Taylor has got every chance to make that dream a reality, as she eyes up her next fight on December 10th – the same night Anthony Joshua takes on Eric Molina.
